IT'S NOT SAME-SEX!!! IT'S SAME-GENDER!!! SAYING SAME-SEX IS CISNORMATIVE AND IN SOME CASES TRANSPHOBIC!!!!!!!!!!!
Explain pls
it's basically like saying ever same-gender couple is also same-sex
Oh okay. Thanks for the explanation :)
Yeah i hate it when people constantly say same-sex. :< it completely leaves out trans folk
*nods in agreement because idk wut too say*
I had to read this a couple of times to understand but I REALLY agree
I mean I sort of agree, but i don't get mad when people say same-sex. For example, if we say "the first country to legalize same-sex marriage", that's... true. Because even a same-gender marriage was always legal, for example, a lesbian couple could marry if one of the parties was transgender, so was therefore legally recognized as male. And even opposite-gender couples could not legally get married if one party was trans, and was therefore legally recognized as their assigned sex.
Now on the other hand, same-sex is often used by TERFs or other trans-exclusionists to justify transphobia (i.e. JK Rowling saying "if sex isn't real, there is no same-sex attraction".) In these contexts, that would be transphobic.
Basically, if you want to be inclusive of trans people, which you should, you should try saying same-gender instead. But don't get mad when people say same-sex and they don't realize the possible transphobia, because language takes time to evolve. And in certain cases, same-sex is correct. Just a quick PSA.
What do you think?
