Chapter 2
When I caught up to her I touched her shoulder. She flinched like I had hit her or something. " Hey, are you okay?" I asked her.
She stopped walking again and turned around. I still had my hand on her shoulder. " Don’t touch me please" She whispered the last part. In her voice, I heard this vulnerability which was something I’d never heard before from her. I let her shoulder go and we continued walking down the hallway. When we got to the car, she looked at me and said, " I have one rule, what happens or what you see in my house stays there. Got it?"
" Okay," I nodded and got into the car. She pulled out of the parking lot and put on some music. As soon as she put on the radio I started to sing along. It was Counting Stars by One Republic. I listen to them all the time, so I knew the song by heart. She pulled out of the parking lot and drove down the street. A couple of minutes later we pulled into her driveway. We both got out of the car and she unlocked her front door. I followed her into her room. For as long as we have known each other I’d never been over to her house.
When I walked into her room it was covered in music and musical posters, anime merch, books, and art. I awed at her room since it looked a lot like mine except for the fact that hers was neater. She had playbills and posters all over her room. Anime merch and cosplays were in her closet and She even had a piano in her room.
I turned around with my mouth hanging open. " How come you never told me you liked this stuff?" I asked her.
" And look like a nerd? No thanks. I take it you like this stuff too?"
" Yeah, I didn’t take you as... well… fan of any of this, It doesn’t seem like you"
" Well like I said what you see in my house stays here. I’m assuming you’ve read Percy Jackson so we don’t need to do research we can just finish the packet now."
" Yeah," I walked over to her bed and sat down. " So I can do the first part of the packet and you do the second part If that’s okay with you?" I suggested as she sat down across from me on her bed. I tried to make small talk with her " How long have you played piano?"
She looked up at me with a glare " Just because we’re working together on this project doesn’t mean we’re friends," She rudely replied " Don’t talk to me unless it has something to do with the project. Certainly don’t talk to me at school." She turned back to her work.
I turned back to mine. The first question was ‘Who are the 12 deities that reside on Mount Olympus?’ Who can’t answer that? I flipped to the next page which was full of basic questions about Greek mythology. I looked up to find the sun was shining through the window onto the bed. I looked at Callen. Her dark hair was falling over her shoulder with the sun shining on it making it shine. She glanced up and smirked at me and turned back to the packet.
A couple of minutes later we both finished our parts of the packet. " Can I?" I asked as I pointed towards the piano. She nodded and I walked over and sat down. I played a song that I had created a couple of years ago. My fingers moved without thinking.
My mind found the words that I wanted to fit. " Could I tell you? Could I let you in?" I started singing more confidently. " Could you see past my fake smile? Could you see my true self?" I continued singing the song. I change the lyrics a lot to fit whatever I’m feeling. Since I chose the slow version I decided to make the song about my fake mask. I finished the song.
I turned to Callen to find her with her eyes closed with a smile on her lips. " That was beautiful Izzy. I’ve never heard anything like that. What was that?"
" Oh… That was a song I made a couple of years ago. I change the lyrics a lot," I blushed slightly at her compliment. " Nobody has ever heard it. Did you like it?"
She stared at me open-mouthed. " Did I like it? I loved it! I never thought that you would sing like that. You sing so beautifully!" She exclaimed. I blushed at her words. " Sorry… I got carried away," She cleared her throat. " Anyways, you asked me earlier how long I have played Piano. I’m 15 and, I’ve been playing for about 7 years, so I’ve been playing since I was 8. How about you? How long have you been playing?"
I thought about it. I started last year. " I haven’t been playing for long for about a year. Not as long as you’ve played. You must be really good if you’ve played that long. Would you mind playing a song for me?” I asked her. I traded my spot with hers.
She began to play with her notes ringing out so softly and true. I recognized the song almost immediately. It was Canon in D by Pachabel one of my favorite classical pieces of all time along with Fur Elise by Beethoven. I’ve played this piece a thousand times but I’ve never been able to play it this good.
I walked up next to her and played along with her in the higher octave leaning into the music-making every note attached to me and showing my true feelings. I can feel myself slowly drift into the darkness that overwhelms me. I feel myself hit the floor and then darkness consumes me.
