What a trigger is..
A trigger is something that sets off a memory tape or flashback transporting the person back to the event of the persons original trauma. This can be anything.
An internal trigger comes from within the person. It can be a memory, a physical sensation, or an emotion.
Internal triggers
For example, say you're exercising and your heart starts pounding. That sensation might remind you of a time you were running from an abusive partner. That would be considered an internal trigger.
External triggers:
External triggers come from the environment. They can be a person, place, or a specific situation.
Some common things that may cause a person to feel triggered:
A movie, television show, or news article that reminds you of the experience
A person connected to the experience
Arguing with a friend, spouse, or partner
A specific time of day
Certain sounds that remind you of the experience (a military veteran might be triggered by loud noises that sound like gunfire)
Changes to relationships or ending a relationship
Significant dates (such as holidays or anniversaries)
Going to a specific location that reminds them of the experience
Smells associated with the experience, such as smoke
Why people do not need to explain their triggers.
The short answer is they don't have to, it could trigger them
For some people, just a word can trigger them, so having to say/write it can make them feel panicky. The reason can also be a very perosonal thing. The person will most likely be triggered by explaining the answer.
All it will do is make them regret asking for you to add the Tw.
One trigger I want to explain
A trigger for f*rries (u)
This is often caused by Masklophobia, a specific phobia used to classify a general and in some cases an irrational fear of masks, people in costumed clothing and mascots
This does NOT mean the person is anti-fur. This is due to the fact any mascot/masked thing will most likely trigger them. I am a f*rry and I will tell you now that if you are triggered by f*rries in a non-hateful way then I respect you (just don't be anti-fur).
